Captain Seaweed’s Pub

Providence, Rhode Island

Located in the heart of a residential neighborhood with relentless adherence to a theme, Captain Seaweed’s Pub combines some of the best possible ingredients to make a great dive bar. Part of the Fox Point neighborhood in Providence, Captain Seaweed’s Pub makes no mystery about its theme, an explosion of nautical knick-knacks covering every interior inch and spilling out onto the dive bar’s expansive back patio.

In the shadow of nearby Brown University, the Providence dive bar’s exterior hides some of the decoration intensity found inside, a simple red brick wall capped with a simple awning and a carved wooden sign. Ledges atop the bar’s pervasive wood paneling that runs halfway up its walls provide additional perches for model ships and miniature tiki sculptures.

The Providence weather isn’t always agreeable, but when it is, Captain Seaweed’s Pub makes a case for best patio in the city. Grass umbrellas provide near total coverage across an area absolutely caked with taxidermy fish, nautically-themed signs and the occasional pirate mannequin presiding over the proceedings. The Providence dive bar has been known to light tiki torches at night in this Providence oasis, adding to the ambiance and making for fine lighting while taking down a domestic beer or two.
