Hideaway Bar

Orlando, Florida

Orlando’s Hideaway Bar looks every bit a Florida dive bar, the color scheme outside a reference to the bar’s status as a Miami Dolphins backer bar. The shape of the space makes the Orlando dive bar feel almost like an extended front porch that happens to have a building attached to it, the long permanent awning stretching toward Virginia Drive in the city’s Ivanhoe Village neighborhood. The motto here is “when you wanna get away” in keeping with the Florida vibe, all of it packed into a pretty classic dive bar layout that includes the kind of indoor-outdoor features that come with operating in pleasant weather. The menu here extends well beyond the typical dive bar fare with staples like burgers the star, yes, but two pages of affordable offerings add variety not often seen at a dive bar that opens at 7 AM.

But the real story here is the move of Hideaway Bar across the street, part of a land swap deal made with developers of a complex named The Yard at Ivanhoe. Though the owner of Hideaway Bar originally chose not to sell to the company that had purchased the land adjacent to the bar’s plot, a change of heart resulted in plans to create a new and expanded Hideaway Bar as part of a fresh development nearby. Time will tell whether the shift to a fresh space preserves the divey appeal of what exists today.
